Rooney Supports Legislation to Financially Protect Veterans
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Thomas J. Rooney (R-FL) issued the following statement on the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of H.R. 4958, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2018:
“Making sure we are doing all we can to provide for our nation’s veterans is one of our key responsibilities in Congress,” Rooney said. “These brave men and women risked their lives to protect our communities. Ensuring they can keep their heads above water in the face of rising costs is the least we can do to protect them in return.”
The Veterans’ Compensation COLA Act of 2018 would provide a cost-of-living increase for wartime disability compensation as well as compensation for their dependents. If signed into law, the COLA would be identical to the COLA set by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
The legislation would allot a clothing allowance and would also provide dependency and indemnity compensation to surviving spouses. Adjustments to the COLA would increase according to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The increase would take effect on December 1.
