Rooney Statement on Administration’s Reported Payment to Iran
Yesterday, reports surfaced that the Obama Administration paid $400 million in cash to Iran in exchange for the release of four Americans being detained in Tehran.
In January an unmarked cargo plane, carrying Euros, Swiss Francs and other foreign currency, delivered the equivalent of $400 million to Iran. Around the same time, four Americans being unjustly detained in Tehran were released by the Iranian government. The Obama Administration is claiming that the timing of the payment and prisoner exchange was merely coincidental.
Congressman Tom Rooney issued the following statement on the subject:
“The US has had a long standing policy not to reward kidnappers and terrorists with cash. If this report is true, it would only further prove that the Obama Administration’s intentions in Iran are more than misguided – they are dishonorable. Iran remains the largest state sponsor of terrorism, and I’m concerned that this money will go to fund its regional allies like the Assad regime in Syria and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah.”
