Rooney Announces Award of FEMA SAFER Grant
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Rooney announced the awarding of a $4 million Assistance to Firefighters Grant to the Polk County Fire Rescue by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“This program is designed to give local fire agencies necessary funding to provide around the clock protection from fire-related hazards and I am proud to see it awarded in my district,” said Rooney. “This grant money will go a long way towards making sure that the Polk County Fire Rescue has the resources they need to best serve the community.”
After being notified of their receipt of the grant Melony Bell, Board Chair, said, “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank U.S. Representative Tom Rooney for his letters and phone calls of support that helped Polk County secure this funding. This will allow the county to provide more effective services and enhance firefighter safety.”
The FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program provides grant funding to help recipients strengthen their ability to respond to fire and improve overall readiness. The funding is meant to be used to create a more favorable working environment by increasing the number of trained, certified, and competent firefighters capable of responding to emergencies.
Rooney represents Florida’s 17th Congressional District which includes parts of Polk County. He also serves on the House Appropriations Committee which was responsible for appropriating approximately $345 million for competitive SAFER grants.
